PREPARING FOR H1N1 FLU PANDEMIC
(En español)
August 26, 2009
As children return to school, we must be aware that the H1N1 influenza virus is returning also. Some school systems in Alabama experienced its presence last spring; however, scientists predict that the prevalence of this illness may be wide spread during the fall and winter months. Being prepared at home and at school can decrease the chances of acquiring and spreading this virus.
Symptoms of H1N1 Flu Virus (Human Swine Flu) are
•Fever greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit
•Cough
•Sore throat
Other symptoms that may be involved include:
•Body aches
•Headache
•Rhinorrhea (excessive discharge of mucus from the nose)
•Chills
•Fatigue
•Diarrhea
•Vomiting
The most recent guidelines issued from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) include the following:
•Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
•Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash immediately after you use it.
•Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
•Stay home if you get sick. The CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to avoid infecting them.
•If you are sick, stay home until at least 24 hours after you are free of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications.
•Avoid giving children medications that contain aspirin due to the association with Reye's syndrome.
As we face renewed challenges of H1N1, we ask that parents and educators continue to follow these preventive measures. By working together, we can reduce the risk associated with this virus. The impact depends on how seriously we take the precautions.
